Sapphire had to admit that the lamb was the best she had ever tasted, and she adored roast lamb, especially with a hint of rosemary. Mrs Lewis had done a wonderful job; the meat was succulent, medium rare, and served with blackcurrant jelly, crispy roast potatoes, buttered cabbage, carrots and the richest, most flavourful gravy she had ever had.

‘This is gorgeous, Mrs Lewis,’ she said.

‘Thank you. I make a good roast dinner if I do say so myself.’

‘It’s one of the best I’ve ever had.’

‘Have some more then,’ said Mrs Lewis.

‘I will, thank you. Is there any more gravy?’

‘Can I have some more?’ asked Lulu.

‘Yes, but only when you’ve eaten what’s on your plate.’

‘Okay,’ said Lulu.

Sapphire glanced at James who was watching her reaction. She’d talk to him later, as the dynamics in this family were puzzling to say the least. Lulu acted and was treated like a child, but she was celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday. There were secrets in the Lewis family, and she wanted to know what they were.

For now, though, it was enough to be enjoying this glorious roast dinner and listen to the conversation around the table. Sometimes you picked up a lot about people from small talk and body language. People gave themselves away, especially when they had something to hide.

‘How’s the job going, Phoebe?’ asked James.

‘It’s fine. In fact, although I didn’t want to say anything yet, I might be in line for a partnership next year.’

‘Well done!’ said James.

‘Yes, that’s great,’ said Sapphire, ‘Many congratulations.’ Another woman pushing through the glass ceiling. Sapphire approved.

‘Mum? Got nothing to say to me?’ Phoebe asked.

Sapphire could feel James tense next to her and she wondered if it was all going to kick off. There was a lot of emotion simmering under the surface in this family. She put her head down and kept eating, pretending she wasn’t listening.

‘Well done, dear.’

‘You could say it as if you mean it.’ Phoebe deflated as if it wasn’t worth the effort.

‘I’m glad you’re doing well in your job, Phoebe, but it’s only what we all expect. And anyway, you’ve never cared about my feelings before.’

‘That’s rubbish, Mum, and you know it. I’ve always wanted your approval, but you and Dad never had much time for me. Not after Lulu was born, anyway.’

‘Well you know why. She took up all of our time.’

‘Right,’ said James, ‘If we’ve all finished, let’s get the cake in and we can sing Happy Birthday.’ He stood up and left the room, carrying the tureen that had held the vegetables.

Lulu, who had been sitting quietly with her head down, suddenly perked up.

‘Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to Me…’ she sang quietly to herself.

Sapphire stood up and started to collect the plates. She wondered if someone would stop her, telling her that, as a guest, she didn’t need to do that, but no one did. She hurried into the kitchen after James.

‘Sorry about that,’ said James, putting the tureen into the dishwasher. Sapphire added the plates.

‘No need to apologise.
